The AI race is speeding towards disaster

Bill Gates just wrote that he’s extremely concerned about AI and the direction we’re headed.

Better late than never I guess, but his worries echo what so many have been warning about for years.

The AI race is speeding towards disaster and in the United States there are no nationwide regulations in place to make sure we don’t drive our society off a cliff.

In his blog post, the Microsoft founder writes, “I don’t see evidence that leaders, experts, and communities are confronting the challenges adequately. There is no plan to ease the entry into the AI era.”

There is a high probability that AI will be the end to most jobs. Completely gone. Gates himself says this.

“The transition to this new AI era will be one of the most turbulent times in human history. How will we use this technology to make the world a fairer place and keep it from widening the divide between rich and poor?”

In China, (the country we’re supposedly racing against) they have put in strong regulations to help workers in this new AI world. The courts have ruled that workers can’t be fired simply because artificial intelligence replaced their jobs. Why won’t the U.S. do something similar?

What are we doing?

Collectively, our elected politicians are sleepwalking, while more and more of our money gets sent to prop up the AI industry’s global aspirations.

The silver lining is that every day I see that more regular people are waking up to these dangers, but some unfortunately are still indifferent.

But that’s why Bill Gates words are so important here. Like it, or not, he is after all one of the most influential tech leaders of the 20^th/21^st century.

He lays it out plainly:

·       Many jobs will disappear forever.

·       AI will empower people (and perhaps AIs) to do more harm.

·       AI could stunt our kids’ development and replace human relationships.

“We have to be deliberate about ensuring that it benefits everyone and not just a wealthy few.”

That’s why these November elections are so important. I believe that we need to completely redo our government. This is the starting point.

We are in too dangerous of a time in history to keep allowing corporations and billionaires to make every single decision for our future.

People must be lining down the streets to vote for decision makers from our communities, that are free from corporate influence, and who have the guts to protect their cities and their states.

Unfortunately, voter turnout continues to be frustrating low in this country despite the risks.

We must break this cycle. Otherwise, we’ll find ourselves stuck in this dystopian anti-human world we’re heading to. And that’s not just me talking…when Bill Gates and others influential people warn about this, (regardless of how you feel about them) it’s still at least worth a listen.
